Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Kiev subway (Kyiv metro) consists from three lines – Red line (Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska line), Blue line (Kurenivsko-Chervnonarmiyska line) and Green line (Syretsko-Pecherska line). Underground is the fastest and the most comfortable transport in Kiev, because it takes only 20 minutes to reach centre from far suburbs and trip coasts only 1.70 hrivnas for all directions.

All three lines are connected in city centre – there are three junctions like Teatralna-Zoloti Vorota (Red–Green), Hreshchatyk-Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Red-Blue) and Pl.L.Tolstogo-Palats Sportu (Blue-Green). All of these junctions are located nearby, so why it is comfortable to interchange from line to line.

In subway, during rush-hours (7 am – 10 am and 5 pm – 8 pm), is full of passengers – each day, 1.9 millions are using this transport (for example, this number is bigger, then population of Kharkov, the second city in Ukraine by population). Each year, 664 millions of passenger’s uses underground. Because of this, metro can by full of people in rush hours, during this time it is very hard to use this transportation.

Like most of European subways, Kiev underground is interesting like architectural sight. Subway was opened 6 of November 1960, during Soviet era – first stations, that were opened for visitors were Vokzalna, Universitet, Hreshchatyk, Arsenalna and Dnipro (all of them on Red line). Like most of Soviet metro systems, Kiev subway stations were mostly underground and deep – today there are only few stations on the surface.

After opening, subway was extended on the Left bank. In 70-ies, metro is reaching Sviatoshyn and Nyvky suburbs, Blue line opens in 1976. In 80-ies, Blue line connects districts Podil, Obolon and Nova Zabudova with metro system. Then, in 1989, was opened for passengers Green line, that in 90-ies was extended to Lukianivka, Pechersk and Left bank suburbs – Osokorky, Poznyaky and Kharkivskyy massiv. In the new century, metro was extended to Syrets, Akademmistechko and Chervonyy Khutir. Today, authority has plans to extend metro to Holosiiv and Teremky (Blue line, late 2009-2011), Vynogradar and Nova Darnytsa (Green line, 2015-2020), open new line (Orange line, which will be reaching Voskresenka on Left bank and Solomianka on Right bank) which will have name Podilsko-Vygurivska and also a new line, which will located only on Left Bank (Cyan (Livoberezhna) line, this line will connect Troeshchyna, Voskresenka, Darnytsa, Berezhnyaky, Poznyaky and Osokorky).

Rolling stock in Kiev subway is mostly presented by five cars trains, that are working on Blue and Red line in 2-3 minutes interval (1 minute in rush hour) and in 5 minute interval on Green (2-3 in rush hour). In evening time, trains are stopping on stations each 8-10 minutes.
